Can Goldenberries strengthen your skin?

The goldenberry is an ancient fruit; widely used in folk medicine in many cultures around the world as a natural treatment for asthma, hepatitis, malaria, rheumatism and dermatitis; in South Africa, for
example, heated goldenberry leaves are applied to the body to relieve inflammation. Recent clinical
studies support this “beliefs”, it has been scientifically proven that the high amounts of vitamin A and C present in goldenberries, makes them an excellent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory fruit.
Just these two properties enhance health through out our body in many ways, helping us eliminate harmful toxins and improving blood circulation.

At has been scientifically proven that the high amounts of vitamin A and C present in goldenberries,
makes them an excellent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory fruit.

Environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides may not show in a form of a life threatening disease, however these harmful toxins also known as free radicals do show in our skin. Dermatitis is a general term that describes an inflammation of the skin, it has many causes and occurs in many forms, it usually involves an itchy rash on swollen, reddened skin. Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, extreme damage can occur; of particular importance is that free radical damage accumulates with age.

There are various types of dermatitis; Atopic dermatitis is a form of dermatitis likely related to a mix of factors, including dry skin, a gene variation, an immune system dysfunction, bacteria on the skin and environmental conditions. Contact dermatitis results from direct contact with one of many irritants or allergens; such as poison ivy, jewelry containing nickel, cleaning products, perfumes, cosmetics, and even preservatives in many creams and lotions.

Symptoms of Dermatitis
Along with the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of A and C vitamins, the regenerating properties of the complex B vitamins, thiamine and niacin; makes goldenberries a mighty fruit. Doctors recommend dietary supplements, such as vitamin D for the treatment of dermatitis, a vitamin that is also naturally found in goldenberries. More over goldenberries contain vitamin B3, witch has been found to be very effective in acne treatment. (See. Goldenberries; The Essential Multivitamin Supplement)

For many years natural medicine has been discouraged by the lack of scientific research, however; plants and substances found in nature had been used for centuries to alleviate many health issues.
Goldenberries will protect your body and make it glow from the inside out. But lets not wait till we are sick to enjoy this dehydrated little gems.

Goldenberries; a must have Superfruit for Vegans and Vegetarians

You might choose to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet because you believe it will improve your health. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, animal products, especially fatty cuts of meat and full-fat dairy products, are linked to clogged arteries, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers, leading people to search for meat-free diets. the key to a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet is to enjoy a variety of foods, however the more restrictive your diet is, the more challenging it can be to get all the nutrients you need. A vegan diet for example eliminates natural food sources of vitamin B-12, as well as milk products, which are good sources of calcium.

Although  no single food can provide all the nutrients your body needs, goldenberries offer great help; they contain B-12 and D vitamins. Also essential minerals like phosphorus, iron, potassium, and zinc; vital nutrients, some of which are hard to absorb and hard to find in plant based foods.

Iron is a crucial component of red blood cells, goldenberries contain more iron than beans and almost the same amount as in animal sources, such as beef. Since it isn't as easily absorbed from plant sources, the recommended intake of iron for vegetarians is almost double that recommended for
nonvegetarians. The vitamin C also present in goldenberries helps the body absorb iron more efficiently.

Goldenberries contain more iron than beans and almost

the same amount as in animal sources, such as beef.

Vitamin D plays an important role in bone health. Our body can make is own vitamin D from the sun, it is found in very few foods including goldenberries. Most people get Vitamin D from cow's milk, since is added by manufacturers. Vegetarians and vegans  may need a vitamin D supplement however goldenberries can provide up to 40% RDI.

Zinc is highly concentrate in dry goldenberries, it is an essential component of many enzymes and plays a role in cell division and in formation of proteins. Like iron, zinc is not as easily absorbed from plant sources as it is from animal products.

Potassium is very important for the normal functioning of our organs. Concentration of potassium is high in goldenberries with 320mg pre serving Vitamin B12 is necessary to produce red blood cells and prevent anemia. This vitamin is found almost exclusively in animal products, so it can be difficult to get enough B-12 on a vegan diet. However goldenberries contain this highly structured vitamin also known as cobalamin.

Phosphorus  is an essential mineral primarily used for growth and repair of body cells and tissues, together with calcium (also present in goldenberries) phosphorus provides structure and strength. Phosphorus is also required for a variety of biochemical processes including energy production and pH regulation. Goldenberries contain 6% RDI of phosphorus. The unique combination of minerals and vitamins present in goldenberries, aids in the absorption of essential nutrients such as proteins (not readily absorbable in plant based foods) from vegetables.

Goldenberries also serve as a natural fully raw daily vitamin supplement
and the best part is they taste great!
One sample of goldenberries contained 78.9 percent water, 0.3 percent protein, 0.2 percent fat, 19.6 percent total carbohydrate, 4.9 percent fiber, 1.0 percent ash. Per 100 g, there were 73 calories, 8 mg calcium, 55 mg phosphorus, 1.2 mg iron, about 1 mg sodium, 320 mg potassium, 1,460 mg B-carotene equivalent, 0.10 mg thiamine, 0.03 mg riboflavin, 1.70 mg niacin, and 43 mg ascorbic acid.

Are Goldenberries beneficial for People with Cancer?

The DNA inside a cell is packaged into a large number of individual genes, each of which contains a set of instructions telling the cell what functions to perform, as well as how to grow and divide. Cancer is caused by errors in those instructions.

Cancer Cell
Most gene mutations aren't inherited; It has been estimated by the American Cancer Society, that as much as one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States are related to diet and activity factors, such as smoking, radiation, viruses, carcinogens chemicals, obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise. Most of these factors, as described in previous blogs can be easily prevented and regulated by the daily consumption of fruits such as goldenberries;

scientific research has shown that substances present in goldenberries have positive effect in curing various types of cancer.

Goldenberries contain a unique substance called Hydroxywithanolide E, a compound that research has shown to be very effective in preventing genetic mutations in the DNA of the cells in the lungs.

Hydroxywithanolide E’s ability to mitigate DNA damage currently has scientists looking to it as a natural chemotherapy agent for lung cancer and other types of cancer such as skin and colon cancer.

Hydroxywithanolide E
In an experiment documented in the book “Issues in Cancer Epidemiology and Research/2011 Edition”, the anti-hepatoma and anti-inflammatory effects of the goldenberry were also helpful in preventing the growth of cancer causing cells.

 Dr Abram Hoffer
Also, goldenberries contain high amounts of vitamin B3 (Niacin) and vitamin C, both substances had been extensively study and used by  Dr Abram Hoffer, head of psychiatry department at Regina General Hospital in Canada. He and his collages discovered that the administration of large oral doses of vitamin B3 along with vitamin C  effected a cure for cancer. He treated 134 patients with advanced stage cancer in his own private practice and conducted a study over a period of 12 years. Not surprisingly 33 of his patients who chose not to undertake his vitamin 'cancer treatment' program, have an average survival time of 5.7 months and the survival time of those who did follow his program was an average of 100 months.

Furthermore goldenberries promote good mental health, allowing us to want to be active, they inheast our body organs to optimal functionality, and they help our body release harmful toxins effectively and naturally. These studies although not supported by mainstream pharmaceutics are of extreme importance and represent a great leap in cancer care and treatment, because in essence, current chemotherapy drugs work by killing cancer cells and tumors faster than they kill the rest of the body,
therefore being very harmful for the patient’s overall health.

Can Goldenberries Help You Loose Weight?

Imagine a food, (not a drug), that’s powerful enough to activate positive mental and physical change in your body.... That’s right! Goldenberries.

Goldenberries can have a profound impact on lifestyle and holistic wellness; they posses nutrients that promote effective restoring and function of body organ systems, including the brain and endocrine systems; improvements in just those areas directly relate to mood and energy. Many people that regularly consume goldenberries report high increases in energy levels and mental functioning, experiencing a positive change in how they view their overall health, how they feel and how they function.

The stress-reducing B-complex vitamins in goldenberries are key factors in helping you unlock the energy from the food you eat, turning every meal or snack into energy your body can use. Vitamin B1 supports the immune system, nervous system, and adrenal glands , the latter of which helps regulate cellular metabolism. The high levels of vitamin B12 also helps produce red blood cells and built muscle, making goldenberries an excellent natural source of energy. (See, Goldenberries; The Essential Multivitamin Supplement)

Goldenberries are rich in protein and fiber, both of which help slow the release of sugar into the blood stream, providing a steady supply of energy. Fiber is a nutrient that supports healthy digestion and cholesterol levels; it has been associated with weight control because it bulks up in your stomach and digests slowly, keeping you feeling full for longer. An ounce of goldenberries contains 3 grams of fiber.

Also a diet that is too high in sugar, increases the risk of weight gain; compared to other dried fruits, goldenberries are a great choice when it comes to sugar content because manufacturers don't add any extra sugar during processing. One ounce of goldenberries contain about 9 grams of natural sugar, very few calories, about 80 and zero grams of fat, allowing you to eat them like candy, without the guilt.

Goldenberries support both, body and mind. They and are readily available and very easy to incorporate to cereals, smoothies and trail mixes. Many people are turning to these sources of nutrition to correct health deficits and put their wellness back on track.

The Renowned Dr. Oz  calls goldenberries “ The Belly  Blaster #1” and recommends snaking one-quarter cup of dry goldenberries daily.

Goldenberries Support Your Liver and Detox Your Body

A healthy liver means a healthy body. The liver helps to fight infections and cleanse the blood, it also helps digest food and store energy for when you need it. A healthy liver has the amazing ability to grow back, or regenerate when is damaged.

Goldenberries help nourish and support the liver which in turn detoxifies our body. Aiding this organ is of a major importance because it gets rid of environmental and food based toxins we take into our system.

The anti-inflammatory properties of goldenberries play a very important role in the protection of  the
liver; since an inflamed liver may cause no discomfort at all; when liver inflammation is left untreated, it starts to scar. As excess scar tissue grows, it replaces healthy liver tissue, this process is called fibrosis. Scar tissue can’t be effective enough in removing toxins from the body as healthy liver tissue does, and can even keep blood from flowing through your liver.

The exact pathway of goldenberries’ liver benefits isn’t completely understood, however, one of the withanolides present in goldenberries called withagulatin A has been associated with a reduction in liver scarring and a reversal of liver degradation.

Furthermore, goldenberries are linked to optimal kidney health, helping to eliminate toxins by
stimulating urination and flushing out excess fats, salts, and toxins from the lymphatic system. Ancient Egyptians used goldenberries as a medicinal plant for treating kidney and urinary passages diseases and as  general fortifier of the human body.

It makes perfect sense to support an organ that is responsible for removing toxins from the body. A
healthy and functional liver reduces the toxic buildup in the cells of your body, making your skin look brighter, and the renewed breakdown of fat makes it easier for muscles to tone up. Eating goldenberries in the daily basis is an easy, and delicious way to continually detox your body, feel great, and look healthier.

Goldenberry Quinoa Salad

The Pichuberry, also known as Physalis peruviana, is a plant that yields a small, smooth berry. In Peru it is known as aguaymanto or Inca berry.

The Pichuberry has many health benefits. It is one of the most abundant sources of vitamin C available among all fruits and plants. Its vitamin C levels reach as much as 20 times of that in an orange. It is also a powerful antioxidant and is effective in boosting immunity while restoring vitality. No wonder the Incas were so strong!

Promising studies show that Pichuberries antioxidant levels may also prevent cellular aging and the onset of cancer, all while promoting healing of wounds and some allergies. Respiratory disorders, such as asthma, are also improved due to the fruit.

I would consider the Pichuberry an anti-diabetic fruit. Pichuberries aid in reducing sugar levels in the blood and stimulating hormones that secrete insulin in diabetic patients.

GOLDENBERRIES AND THE POWER OF ANTIOXIDANTS.

In our previous blog “5 things you need to know about the mighty Goldenberry”,we talked about the
amazing health benefits goldenberries can provide to our body. The high levels of antioxidants present in goldenberries has led them to become the new “superfood”, that’s why we wanted to go a bit further this time and explain which kind of  antioxidants goldenberries have and the role they play in our overall health.

Antioxidants are chemicals that block the activity of other chemicals known as free radicals, the body generates free radicals as the inevitable byproducts of turning food into energy. Free radicals are highly reactive substances that have the potential to cause damage to cells by stealing electrons, this can lead to dramatic changes in the structure and function of our cells. Free radical damage can change the  instructions coded in a strand of DNA, these can also alter a cell’s membrane, changing the flow of what enters the cell and what leaves it, such alterations can cause healthy cells to mutate into cancerous ones.

Antioxidants, like the carotenoids and polyphenolic compounds found in goldenberries, can neutralize free radicals, these antioxidants are powerful cancer fighters, prevalent in goldenberries as
well as in wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Carotenoids are colorful plant pigments and powerful antioxidants that can help prevent some forms of cancer and heart disease, they act to enhance your immune system’s response to infections. Some
carotenoids poses the ability to turn into vitamin A once they are consumed. Lycopene, the orange-red pigment found in goldenberries and tomatoes, is a type of carotenoid that does not turn into vitamin A,  however is still of significant value, since it is an antioxidant even more potent than beta-carotene.

Orange and yellow fruits and vegetables have high vitamin A activity because of the carotenoids they contain. Generally, the deeper the color of the fruit or vegetable is an indication of a higher
concentration of carotenoids. Carrots, are also a good source of beta-carotene.

Polyphenols are antioxidants also found in goldenberries, these have recently been termed
“lifespan essentials”, and they actively work in the body to prevent certain disease mechanisms from occurring.  Polyphenols are antioxidants from plant foods that work in the body to enhance health in complex ways, their specific health-promoting actions are still being actively researched, and it is generally recognized  that they can reduce the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and basically help to protect many body systems from the risks or ravages of many types of chronic disease. It is possible that the health  promoting effects of polyphenols present in goldenberries are not due to their antioxidant qualities, but  rather because they help control blood sugar spikes after meals, these is why the consumption of goldenberries is recommended to people with diabetes.

Boosting the intake of carotenoids and polyphenols on a daily basis by eating goldenberries is easy to do, and can be a tasty, gourmet adventure.

Goldenberry Uses Around The World

In most countries where goldenberries are grown, they are considered fruits only for backyard gardens or for children to pluck and eat, in Europe, however, goldenberries carry prestige and are of particular interest among up-scale restaurants and bakeries.

We invite you to take a quick tour around the world exploring the common culinary and non-culinary uses of this versatile fruit.

NORTH AMERICA

The exquisite flavor of Goldenberries makes them an excellent jam fruit, here in north America goldenberries are usually canned as whole fruits or conserved in the form of jam, they are mostly known as preserves under the Hawaiian name poha. Also dry goldenberries are often mixed with nuts and eaten as snacks, in few states including California, where they can be found fresh, people like to add them to salads as a variant to cherry tomatoes. Since goldenberries are a useful small crop for the home garden, their landscaping value tends to be more appreciated, the goldenberry plant fruits grow well in a pot or may be used as a border plant where the soft grey-green foliage can be used to offset other species. The plant also makes a nice looking border filler, where the fruit can be accessed and freely eaten.

EUROPE

Europeans are by far the number one lovers of goldenberries, they often pay premium prices to dip
whole fruits in chocolate or toffee and eat them along with a cup of coffee. Goldenberries have many
culinary applications; people use them to decorate cakes and cookies, make tart fillings, pies, puddings, ice creams and they also consume them fresh by incorporating the berries in fruit salads and fruit cocktails. The British have even found a use of the husk, which they use as a handle to dip the goldenberry fruits in icing and chocolate. The fruit is also used in a wide variety of sauces; in France for instant, people love to eat fish toped with goldenberry sauce; Hungarians on the other hand preferred smoked pork toped with goldenberry sauce. Up-scale restaurant chefs love fresh goldenberries; their piquant aftertaste goes perfect with wines and cheeses (the husks are often used as a fork when they are serve for fondu); they also enjoy using the husks for decorating purposes.

SOUTH AMERICA

Goldenberries are native to South America people usually eat them in abundance, wild and fresh,
Colombians like to stew or cook goldenberries with honey and consume them as dessert. The leaves of goldenberries are said to possess therapeutic value, herbal medical practitioners in Colombia
recommend the use of a decoction prepared with the leaves of the goldenberry plant as a diuretic as
well as an anti-asthmatic. Meanwhile in Peru, the native Indian women perfume the goldenberry fruits and often used them as jewelry, also they like to reduce them into compote and feed their babies and interestingly their parrots.

AFRICA

In South Africa, goldenberries are canned in syrup, and then exported, also in Africa as in Colombia people heat the plant's leaves and apply them as a poultice on inflamed areas of the skin. The native Zulu tribe in Africa uses an infusion prepared with the goldenberry leaves as an enema (a procedure used to clean the bowel of feces by injecting a liquid through the anus) to alleviate abdominal disorders in children.

OCEANIA

In Australia and New Zealand, goldenberries are commonly made into jams and pies, people love to eat them fresh alone as a dessert (the papery covering can be peeled back into tissue-thin flower petals that stand out around the berry like a crown). Some people like to garnish meals with the goldenberry’s husks, especially in the fall season since their yellowish color resembles fall leaves.

ASIA

In India and China goldenberry is classified as a medicinal fruit.“Rasbhari” how the plant is commonly called in India, is often use in traditional folk medicine to treat malaria, rheumatism, dermatitis, asthma, hepatitis, leukemia and even cancer. In Chinese medicine, goldenberries are called Chinese lanterns and are used as homemade remedies for such conditions as abscesses, coughs, fevers, and sore throat.

5 Things You Need To Know About The Mighty Goldenberry

The mighty Goldenberry, how we like to call it here at Merit Trade LLC, is an ancient, delicious citrusy, tangy, flavorful and nutrient-rich fruit originally cultivated by the Incas. This berry, approximately the size of a marble is known by various names including Cape Gooseberry, Aztec berry, Poha berry, Harankash, or Physalis Peruviana (scientific name), however depending on where you live in the world you might know this fruit by a dozen-plus names.

Although not very popular in the U.S;       Goldenberries are attracting more and more attention due to the desire of many people to become more conscious about their eating habits. Loaded with nutrients and antioxidants, Golden- berries consumption can significantly improve your overall health. There are endless reasons why people should become familiar with this exotic fruit, of course besides the obvious one, their incredible taste, which makes them a great addition to salads and cake crusts or a simple out of the bag healthy snack. Here are just five of the many health benefits related to Goldenberries that you want to know about.

1. GOLDENBERRIES ARE THE NEW SUPERFOOD

Recently Goldenberries have been added to the list of superfoods. The term superfoods is given to an special category of foods found in nature. This foods are nutrient-rich and considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Some of this foods include avocado, kale, chia seeds, coconut and many more, They are superior sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients that are vital for our body but cannot make ourselves.

In addition to anti-oxidants and essential nutrients, Goldenberries are a great source of  complex B vitamins (B1, B2, B6 and B12).  These complex B vitamins help reducing stress, improve memory, reduce fatigue, spur metabolism, relieve PMS and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is also very prominent in goldenberries There is more vitamin C in this exotic fruit than in pears, pineapples, or plums, and only slightly less than citrus fruits. Almost 15% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C is present in a single serving of golden berries, this makes them a very important fruit for the immune system. Furthermore, vitamin C is a key component in the production of collagen, which is what the body needs to repair and produce cells, tissues, organs, and blood vessels.

2. GOLDENBERRIES CAN BATTLE CANCER

The consumption of goldenberries is recommended for people who have a genetic or environmental predisposition towards developing cancer. The primary compound in golden berries that seems to do the healing are a group of naturally occurring steroidal lactones called withanolides. Considerable research shows that withanolides found in goldenberries have anticancer benefits, similar to the ginseng, an indian  plant categorized as an adaptogenic healing plant, because of its benefits to the endocrine system. Withanolides are quite rare, these are powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory unique organic compounds that can slow or even reverse the spread of cancerous cells throughout the body. though beating cancer with plants alone is controversial, those like goldenberries that contain withanolides can be useful in parallel therapy.

3. GOLDENBERRIES ARE A GREAT SOURCE OF VITAMING B12

As said before goldenberries are a great source of complex B vitamins. Vitamin B12 is of particular importance since it can be found naturally in a wide variety of animal foods, but is very hard to find in plant foods unless they are fortified, this is great news for people that follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. Goldenberries can also help people who have had gastrointestinal surgery, since they loose the ability to absorb vitamin B12. Low levels of B12 can cause anemia, loss of balance, numbness or tingling in the arms and legs and weakness.

4. GOLDENBERRIES PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS

With only 53 calories per 100 grams, goldenberries are an excellent option for people trying to lose weight, their high antioxidant value and low sugar content can play a role in low calorie diets and products. The natural sugar content in golden berries is mainly sucrose and is very low in fructose allowing these tiny fruits to deliver a large percentage of your daily nutrients, yet they don’t contribute negative fats or calories to your overall intake, helping you keep weight loss goals on track.

5. ANTI-INFLAMATORY BENEFITS

Probably the most recognized health benefit of goldenberries is their  anti-inflammatory effects derived from their high antioxidant content. This antioxidants can prevent certain chronic diseases and if you suffer from arthritis, gout, muscle aches, chronic pain, or even hemorrhoids, anti-inflammatory compounds can soothe these conditions and increase your quality of life.             Goldenberries are also able to prevent Inflammation of the arteries and blood vessels, which can be very dangerous for the cardiovascular system and lead to the development of atherosclerosis heart disease. it effectively lowers blood pressure as well, which further decreases the symptoms of hypertension and gives relief to your heart.

Although the exact pathway for this benefits aren't completely understood, goldenberries have also been associated with a reduction in liver scarring and a reversal of liver degradation. Furthermore, goldenberries are linked to optimal kidney health, helping to eliminate toxins by stimulating urination and flushing out excess fats, salts, and toxins from the lymphatic system.
